WHAT ARE AIR COILS FOR MRI?

AIR Coils are an advanced MRI coil technology designed to improve adaptability, patient comfort, and workflow efficiency during MRI exams. GE HealthCare describes AIR Coils as ultra-light, flexible coils that can conform more easily to different body shapes and anatomies, helping position the coil closer to the patient while maintaining strong image quality.

Additional features include easier positioning, broader coverage, and a lighter, softer design intended to make the MRI experience more comfortable for a wide range of patients.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN AIR COILS MRI EXAM

  • Because AIR Coils are used as part of an MRI exam, patients must remove all metallic objects from their body before the scan.
  • Please inform the technologist before your appointment if you have any implants, prior surgeries, medical devices, or other conditions that may affect MRI safety.
  • AIR Coils are designed to be light, flexible, and more comfortable than conventional rigid coils, but the preparation steps are still those of a standard MRI exam. This is an inference based on GE HealthCare’s description of AIR Coils as MRI coil technology used during MRI scanning.
  • Patients scheduled for an MRI should also notify our team of any history of asthma, allergies, kidney problems, diabetes, heart problems, thyroid problems, or claustrophobia, as well as anything that may affect comfort during the scan.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE AIR COILS MRI EXAM

  • You will lie down on a padded exam table that slides into the MRI system for imaging.
  • AIR Coils are not a separate scan, but a specialized MRI coil technology used during certain MRI exams to improve fit, coverage, and patient comfort. GE says the coils are flexible, light, and easier to position than rigid conventional coils.
  • Scan times may vary depending on the type of MRI ordered by your physician. Your technologist will explain what to expect before the exam begins.
  • During the exam, it is important to remain as still as possible so the images are clear and accurate.
  • You may hear tapping, thumping, or clicking sounds during the scan. These noises are normal during MRI imaging.
  • You will remain in contact with the MRI technologist throughout the exam, and they can assist if you have any questions or concerns.
